A tour of the great fishing regions of the country: dorado in the Litoral, trout in Patagonia, pejerrey in the pampas and surfcasting on the coast.
A country to fish all year round
Argentina has an enormous variety of fishing: from the dorado of the great northern rivers to the trout of the Patagonian lakes, by way of the pejerrey lagoons of the pampas and the Atlantic coast. This guide tours the main regions and their classic destinations.
Litoral: the realm of dorado and surubí
The Paraná, Uruguay and Paraguay system is the heart of river fishing. The Middle Paraná, between Santa Fe and Entre Ríos, is the mecca of the dorado; Paso de la Patria, Ituzaingó (Yacyretá) and La Paz are classics for dorado and surubí; Concordia and Salto Grande, for dorado on the Uruguay. Warm season (spring to autumn), always with the provincial closures.
Patagonia: trout in lakes and rivers
From Neuquén to Tierra del Fuego, a trout paradise. Legendary fly rivers such as the Limay, the Chimehuín and the Aluminé; great lakes like Nahuel Huapi and Lácar; and gems such as the Strobel (Jurassic Lake) for its giant rainbows and the Río Grande for its sea-run brown trout. Season from November to April, with the Patagonian permit.
The pampas: pejerrey in the lagoons
The Buenos Aires and Santa Fe lagoons are pejerrey country: Chascomús, Gómez, Lobos, Melincué and the Encadenadas chain. Best in autumn and winter. Social, accessible and very productive fishing, close to the big cities.
The Atlantic coast: surfcasting
From San Clemente to Bahía San Blas, beach fishing targets the croaker, pescadilla and flounder. Mar del Plata, Necochea, Claromecó and San Blas are the classic spots. The tides rule.
Cuyo and the center: reservoirs
The large reservoirs of Córdoba (Río Tercero, San Roque), Cuyo (El Nihuil, Potrerillos) and the north (Río Hondo, Cabra Corral) offer pejerrey, trout and even still-water dorado at Cabra Corral.
How to choose
Think about the species you want and the season: dorado and surubí in summer in the north; trout in summer in the south; pejerrey in winter in the pampas; the coast all year. Every PESQA listing has the detail on access, species and season.
