Naciendo en las sierras de la Ventania y bajando hacia Monte Hermoso, el Río Sauce Grande dibuja un largo recorrido de pozones y correderas, con el embalse Paso de las Piedras en su cuenca. Es un río de pejerrey de agua dulce y de tararira, especies que encuentran refugio en sus remansos y orillas vegetadas.
El pejerrey se trabaja de costa con línea de brazoladas y mojarra, o con boya corrediza en los pozones donde se concentra el cardumen, atento al pique fino tan típico de la especie. La tararira aparece en verano entre los juncos y los troncos sumergidos, atacando señuelos de superficie con voracidad; conviene el bajo de acero para aguantar la dentada. En términos generales, el pejerrey rinde con el agua fresca del otoño a la primavera, y la tararira con el calor del verano.
