Where to go for pejerrey a few hours from the city: access, services and the best time to go.
Pejerrey just around the corner
Buenos Aires province is pejerrey country, and several of its best lagoons are a few hours from the capital. Ideal for a weekend outing in autumn and winter, which is when it bites best.
Chascomús
The most classic Pampas lagoon, about 123 km from Buenos Aires on Route 2. Part of the Encadenadas chain, with boat yards and a long pejerrey tradition.
Gómez Lagoon (Junín)
Next to the city of Junín, about 260 km away, it is one of the best fisheries in western Buenos Aires. Campsite, ramps and good-sized fish when the lagoon is on form.
What to bring
Light multi-hook gear, fresh baitfish and warm clothing: the cold that bothers you so much is exactly what switches on the bite. One float per person and the patience to find the school's depth.
Permit
You need the Buenos Aires province fishing permit, available online or at tackle shops. Always carry it: there are checks.
A final tip
If the lagoon is churned up by the wind, look for the sheltered spots and the edges of the reed beds. And respect the sizes: releasing the small ones means fishing for next time.
