- Buscá fondos con piedras, troncos sumergidos o zonas con algo de corriente donde suele raspar su alimento.

- Cebá con carnada vegetal —masa, pan, choclo o pasta— o con lombriz, apoyada directamente en el fondo.
- Esperá con paciencia: el pique suele ser lento y sostenido, casi como un peso muerto que se mueve despacio.
- Clavá con un tirón firme cuando notás que la línea se tensa de forma continua, no con golpes secos.
- Peleá con presión constante: no corre ni salta, pero su cuerpo acorazado y la ventosa hacen que se aferre al fondo con fuerza.
También es habitual como captura incidental mientras se pesca de fondo para otras especies, sobre todo en ambientes con piedras o estructuras sumergidas.
Tips de guía: se la encuentra activa tanto de día como de noche, en especial cerca de estructuras con algas visibles. Su cuerpo está cubierto de placas óseas duras: manejala con cuidado para no lastimarte las manos, y sostenela por el cuerpo, no por las placas de los bordes que pueden ser filosas.
